Years of exposure to the sun along with everyday wear and tear will take a toll on any dashboard, with cracks, peeling upholstery, and faded materials being common problems. For owners of classic cars, that makes restoring an interior that much harder. But if you happen to own a 1969-1975 Porsche 911, you’re in luck. Porsche Classic is now selling reproduction dashboards that fit those models.
Porsche says the design of the reproduction dash is true to the original, but that each piece meets today’s higher standards of quality. The replica dashboards utilize a modern substructure beneath a surface design that will fit right in with a vintage interior. Everything from the dash’s texture to the shade of black used was carefully considered in order to faithfully recreate the original found in earlier 911 models. The dashboard is available for order in the U.S. for $1,353 plus tax, shipping, and handling (where applicable) from any authorized Porsche dealer. The automaker recommends that the dash also be installed by a Porsche dealer with proper training, as it can only be installed using the original assembly procedure that involves removing the windshield. Over the next several years, roughly 100 authorized Porsche dealers around the world will become Porsche Classic partners, capable of servicing older cars and providing parts support.
Because the dash is made using modern parts, Porsche says it will hold up better to normal wear from solar radiation and fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Now if only Porsche can recreate that 1970s new car smell.
