Lamborghini Huracan Performante: 2018 Motor Trend Best Driver’s Car Contender

The car that makes you into a god

The car that makes you into a god

Every driver hopped out of the Lamborghini feeling invincible. “The confidence is unmatched. It’s so easy to drive at ludicrous speeds,” observed Scott Evans. Mark Rechtin concurred, “This car gave me the most confidence on corner exit.” Erick Ayapana felt “so in tune from the first turn of the wheel and tap of the brake—even through the mid-corner bumps.”

Of course, some will presume that the Lambo’s vast sex appeal swayed us, but all Lambos are sexy. This one’s different, as Angus MacKenzie noted: “Finally, a Lambo that’s as good to drive as it looks. There’s substance behind the style that makes the drive experience live up to the theatrics.” One example, pointed out by Jethro Bovingdon: “The gearbox in Corsa mode gives you a solid jolt in a straight line but imperceptibly smooth shifts in corners.” Everyone lauded the linear throttle response of the big-lunged, banshee-wailing V-10 engine. One major complaint with the interior—the hard-shell seats felt tailor-fitted to a waifish Milanese fashion model.

On the objective performance front, this Huracan lapped WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca 1.68 seconds quicker than the 2017 BDC-winning Ferrari 488 GTB. (Yes, we hope Ferrari counters by sending us a 488 Pista next year.)

Randy Pobst loved everything but the brakes. “I couldn’t get it to stop.” Given the car’s gripissimo Michelin P Zero Trofeo R-compound streetable racing tires and carbon-ceramic discs, he blamed the pad material. It should be noted that Pobst had the same complaint with last year’s Ferrari. Maybe that’s just how they do brakes in the Parmigiano-Reggiano region.

When the rest of us drove it at a sub-Pobstian pace on real-world roads, we liked the brakes. In fact, Evans praised them for lacking the Ferrari’s wooden feel, while Ed Loh and Bovingdon characterized their power as capable of provoking retinal detachment or blackout.
