The 2016 Cadillac ATS-V is a new addition to ATS range and serves as the high-performance and range-topping variant.

Vehicle Summary

The 2016 Cadillac ATS-V is a rear-drive, luxury sports sedan and coupe that slots under the larger, more powerful CTS-V.

Overview

A twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V-6 rated at 464 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque is the only engine available in the 2016 ATS-V. The engine can be paired to a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. For a high-performance machine, the ATS-V achieves respectable fuel economy, with manual-equipped cars rated 17/23 mpg city/highway while the automatic achieves 16/24 mpg.

Cabin space isn’t one of the ATS-V’s strengths, making it a squeeze for four adults with the coupe or sedan. Trunk space is small at 10.4 cubic feet in both body styles but it can be expanded thanks to the available 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

Safety

In addition to the standard dual front, front-side and side curtain airbags, the 2016 ATS-V comes standard with dual front knee airbags and can be optioned with rear side airbags for outboard occupants. Extra safety aids can be had as part of the Safety and Security package, which includes forward collision warning, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, and rear thorax airbags. However, opting for the extra safety features means not being able to add the Track Performance package since both cannot be optioned together.

Trims, Packages, and What’s Standard

Standard features include keyless entry and start, Magnetic Ride Control shocks, Cadillac’s CUE infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen and three USB ports, a Bose premium audio system, heated front sports seats with suede inserts, a 5.7-inch LCD display, 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in summer performance tires, front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera.

Additional options include the Luxury package, which adds navigation, sport pedals, adaptive HID headlights with LED accents, and split-folding rear seats (sedan only). The Cadillac CUE and Navigation package adds a 10- or 12-speaker Bose audio system (depending on the body style), navigation, and upgraded Bluetooth connectivity.

For those who intend to take their ATS-V to the track, consider the Track Performance package, which adds a low mass battery and a performance data and video recorder. Additionally, the package also adds the Carbon Fiber package, which includes a carbon fiber front splitter, hood vent and rear diffuser, as well as composite black rocker extensions and body-color rear spoiler. A head-up display is available as part of the Luxury package or as a standalone option.

What We Think

In a First Test review, we said that the ATS-V is deceivingly fast, offering strong acceleration and excellent handling. On the track, the ATS-V proved that it’s a driver’s car thanks to its well-tuned steering and strong brakes. Additionally, the car comes with multiple modes that allow the driver to tailor the ATS-V’s on road manners to their liking. In Track mode, the Performance Traction Management can be accessed to let the driver increase or decrease the car’s aggressiveness. The car’s cabin however, doesn’t feel special since its design is similar to lesser ATS models, aside from minor touches such as red accents on the gauges.

Cool Fact

The ATS-V’s optional eight-speed automatic transmission is shared with the new Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and Z06, and the Cadillac CTS.
