Ingolstadt’s 4 Series Gran Coupe-fighter takes shape
With more and more niches being filled by automakers, it’s no surprise that the Audi A5 Sportback will continue to live on as part of the A5 family. Our spy photographers caught a prototype for the second-generation A5 Sportback, essentially Audi‘s answer to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. In Europe, Audi has offered a Sportback variant of the A5 since 2010.
Even with the camouflage, it’s clear that the A5 Sportback, like the coupe and convertible, will feature an evolutionary exterior design. From the side, the A5 Sportback looks like a smaller, more compact A7, appearing longer than its two-door siblings. Up front, the family resemblance to the rest of the Audi lineup is most evident thanks to Audi’s signature trapezoidal grille and headlights that have a similar shape to the 2017 A4 sedan. Out back, the taillights look like they’ve been stretched compared to the current A5, and an LED brake light spans nearly the entire width of the rear window.
Under the hood, the second-generation A5 will likely have the same engine choices as the 2017 A4, which include a 252-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 for base models, a 354-hp turbocharged V-6 in the S5, and likely a twin-turbo V-6 in the high-performance RS 5. Expect a seven-speed dual-clutch and the ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic to be the only transmission choices in the A5 lineup. Like the A4 sedan, the A5 should be available in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. In the North America, however, it’s unlikely that we’ll get the Sportback due to it overlapping with the A4.
