We may get Audi’s answer to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe
As the debut of the second-generation Audi A5 draws closer, it was originally thought that only the coupe and convertible will be sold in the North America. However, a new report from Automotive News suggests that the four-door Audi A5 Sportback is also coming to the North America to compete against the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe.
During the media event for the 2017 A4, Audi of America President Scott Keogh mentioned that the automaker will add a new body style to the A4 lineup in the second quarter of next year as part of the car’s redesign. The only A5 variant that’s never been sold in the North American territory is the Sportback, which is essentially a four-door hatchback with a coupe-like profile.
“I feel confident that there will be another variant of the A5 that will be a real home run,” Keogh told Automotive News on the sidelines of an A4 media event. “There’s one we don’t have.”
While the executive didn’t provide any powertrain details, expect the A5 range to come standard with the same 2.0-liter turbo-four in the 2017 A4, which is rated at 252 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. The more potent S5 should follow after the base A5 and come equipped with a new 3.0-liter turbo-six found in the 2017 S4 followed by the range-topping RS 5.
