Lexus will introduce a refreshed version of its ES entry-luxury sedan at the 2015 Shanghai auto show on April 20. As this teaser photo shows, the 2016 Lexus ES will receive visual update that includes a new grille in line with the design of other Lexus models.
This photo shows that the 2016 Lexus ES has a restyled spindle grille, with a larger aperture and more prominent chrome trim. Reshaped headlights are now narrower and more angular, with the same Nike swoosh-like running light design that is present on most other new Lexus models.
This version of the Lexus ES, the luxury sedan’s sixth generation, was introduced at the 2012 New York auto show. The front-wheel-drive car is based on the Toyota Avalon, which likewise received a mild facelift at the 2015 Chicago auto show in February. Along with a visual freshening, the 2016 Toyota Avalon benefitted from a retuned suspension, a new Touring trim level, and a revised touchscreen infotainment system.
Powertrains for the 2016 Lexus ES aren’t expected to change from the current model. Today’s ES350 has a 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated for 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque, with a six-speed automatic transmission. The ES300h hybrid combines a 156-hp, 2.5-liter inline-four gas engine with an electric motor-generator to produce a total of 200 hp. The hybrid sedan returns 40/39/40 mpg (city/highway/combined) in EPA testing.
