EQ's next model is a compact EV hatch
Mercedes-Benz has revealed the EQA Concept at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The compact all-electric vehicle previews the next member of the automaker’s upcoming EQ brand of EVs, a hatchback that could hint at the design of the upcoming A-class hatch.
Riding on a 107.4-inch wheelbase, the Mercedes-Benz EQA Concept is 168.7 inches long, 71.3 inches wide and, 56.2 inches tall, meaning it’s about the same size as a compact car like the Volkswagen Golf or the Audi A3. The EQA’s most prominent feature is its interactive grille, which uses a black panel display that changes graphics depending on the drive mode it’s in. In Sport mode, the panel shows a flame-like graphic in blue while in Sport+ mode, it depicts a red Panamericana grille, which is the design found on the Mercedes-AMG GT. The car’s headlights are integrated with the grille and feature laser LED tech that uses fiber instead of diodes to give the cluster a three-dimensional look.
Powering the EQA Concept are two electric motors good for around 200 kW combined or around 268 hp. Total torque rating is 368 lb ft and the car puts its power down to all four wheels via an electronic all-wheel drive system. The two drive modes, Sport and Sport+, also alter how the car distributes torque front to rear. On a single charge, the EQA can travel up to 400 kilometers, or roughly 248 miles (400 km). Using a fast charger, the EQA can regain 100 km or 62 miles every 10 minutes. In addition to standard wall charging, the EQA will be compatible with inductive charging systems.
Along with the EQ range of vehicles, Mercedes-Benz will also launch a range of services that will be made available to owners of those vehicles. One of those services will enable owners to pull up to any public charging station and juice up regardless of the network it’s in. The driver would then pay online at Mercedes’ website. The automaker calls this concept “seamless charging.” Earlier this year, Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, became a major investor in ChargePoint, the leading EV charging provider in the U.S. and it plans to expand its reach into Europe.
Daimler’s approach to emissions-free driving will not be limited to fully electric vehicles as the company will also work on various hybrids for Mercedes-Benz’s EQ sub-brand, ranging from plug-ins to mild hybrids with a 48-volt electrical system and fuel cell vehicles.
