SUV looks even better in person
“Based upon our simulations at the Nürburgring, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio will become the fastest SUV ever,” Reid Bigland, head of Alfa Romeo, said at a press conference.
The Stelvio is also extremely quick, estimated by Alfa Romeo to hit 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. If that’s true, it would beat the 2015 Porsche Macan Turbo and Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, both achieving a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds in our tests. The Stelvio’s time would be on par with the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 Coupe S, which was MT-tested at 3.9 seconds. But the Italian beauty would be no match for the 2015 BMW X6 M, which can do the deed in 3.7 seconds, or the Tesla Model X P90D Ludicrous, the quickest SUV we ever tested, skyrocketing to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds.
Just like the Giulia midsize sedan, the Stelvio rides on the brand new Giorgio platform. The Italian automaker used carbon fiber, magnesium, and aluminum to save weight on the SUV. Alfa says like the Stelvio, the Giulia sets a benchmark for its segment. Bigland also drew contrast between Alfa Romeo and other brands seeking loads of autonomous tech.
“At Alfa, we want people to become actively, physically, and emotionally engaged,” he said. “At a time when the thrill of owning a luxury car seems to be fading, we believe Alfa Romeo offers a welcome alternative.” However, Alfa Romeo is likely still committed to autonomous features. Reports say that the Giulia will receive semi-autonomous tech.
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio will be on display through November 27 at the L.A. auto show.
