2016 Volkswagen Passat Caught Without Camo in California

Here is our first look at the refreshed 2016 Volkswagen Passat. From these spy photos, it’s clear that the midsize sedan receives a more aggressive look, which should help keep it competitive in its segment.

A tourist captured pictures of the sedan as it was driving for a photo shoot in San Jose, Calif. Creases on the hood give the Passat a meaner front end, as does a redesigned grille with more silver embellishments. From the back end, the updated Passat looks quite narrow, perhaps thanks to its large rear window.

We expected Volkswagen was plotting major changes for its stalwart sedan. At last year’s New York Auto Show, we sat down with Volkswagen of America President Michael Horn, who said the refresh would be a “big step” for the model. The current-generation Passat debuted for 2012, and was named Motor Trend’s 2012 Car of the Year.

Look for a number of technology upgrades on the 2016 Passat, including Apple CarPlay smartphone integration as well as forward collision warning and blind-spot monitor. We expect Volkswagen will continue with its current engine lineup, including the 1.8-liter turbo, 2.0-liter diesel, and 3.6-liter V-6 engines.

The 2016 Passat goes on sale by the end of the year.
