2016 audi s4 Model Overview
New for 2016
The 2016 Audi S4 is unchanged.
The 2016 S4 is the high-performance variant of the A4 sedan and comes standard with all-wheel drive. A redesigned S4 will debut for the 2017 model year.
A supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 333 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque is the only engine available in the 2016 S4 and it can be paired to a six-speed manual or a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission. Fuel economy is respectable for the class at 18/28 mpg city/highway for the automatic and 17/26 mpg with the manual. There’s comfortable seating for four passengers in the S4 and up to 12.4 cubic feet of trunk space. Split-folding rear seats are standard for improved cargo-carrying capability.
Standard safety features include dual front, front-side, and side curtain airbags. Rear side airbags are available as a standalone option in all trim levels of the S4. Blind spot warning is available in the Premium Plus trim as part of the Technology package and standard on the Prestige grade. Adaptive cruise control is available only in the Prestige model as part of the Driver Assist package.
The NHTSA gave the 2016 S4 a five-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars). In IIHS evaluations, the car received a Good score in four crash tests and Poor in the small overlap front test (Good is the highest possible score). When equipped with the optional Driver Assist package, the S4 received an Advanced rating in the front crash prevention testing and was able to reduce a 12-mph collision by 11 mph (front crash prevention ratings include Basic, Advanced, and Superior).
Trims, Packages, and What’s Standard
In the base Premium Plus trim, standard features include automatic HID headlights with LED accents, three-zone climate control, leather/Alcantara upholstery, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, heated power front sports seats with driver’s side memory, Audi Drive Select and Bluetooth connectivity. The Technology package adds a rearview camera, blind spot warning, navigation, and front and rear parking sensors. A Bang & Olufsen audio system is optional on the Premium Plus trim and standard on the range-topping Prestige variant. On the range-topping Prestige trim, additional standard features include navigation, the Bang & Olufsen audio system, blind spot warning, a rearview camera, and keyless entry and start. For maximum performance, the S4 is offered with a sport differential and adaptive damping suspension in all trim levels.
What We Think
Despite its age, the 2016 S4 remains one of the best sports sedans available, offering strong performance and handling. In a 2014 First Test review, we said that the S4 offers smooth, linear acceleration, strong handling, and excellent levels of grip thanks to its all-wheel drive system; however, its front heavy nature means the S4 has a tendency to understeer. Despite its firm ride, the S4 remains comfortable, with a well-appointed cabin that’s plush and quiet. Additionally, there’s plenty of space for passengers and cargo. In a comparison test that also included the BMW 335i, Lexus IS 350 AWD, Cadillac ATS, and Volvo S60 T6 R-Design, the Audi S4 placed second because it was let down by its disconnected steering while its interior was deemed uninteresting and a step below the BMW and Lexus in terms of build quality.
- Ridiculously quick in a straight line
